The authors assess the impact of the Osteopathic-EPEC (Education for Physicians on End-of-Life Care) curriculum and the use of osteopathic manipulative treatment in end-of-life care provided by osteopathic physicians.
Twenty-one pulmonary function parameters were measured pre- and postintervention to determine the immediate effects of osteopathic manipulative treatment versus sham manipulation for elderly subjects diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. A follow-up telephone survey conducted 1 day postintervention was used to determine the success of blinding protocols and to document participants' subjective experiences with the intervention models used.
The author describes and recommends a variation on the Muncie technique to improve patient tolerance of this osteopathic manipulative procedure, as illustrated in the treatment of a 37-year-old woman with eustachian tube dysfunction.
