In light of the increasing prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus and decreasing rates of glycemic control among these patients, the author argues that a reevaluation of insulin therapy is overdue. The use of more flexible insulin analogs is encouraged as is a commitment from physicians to identifying and addressing patient concerns about this treatment modality.
With the ultimate goal of promoting compassionate patient care and healing, the author parses numerous institutional barriers to meaningful curricular and cultural reform at the nation's colleges of osteopathic medicine.
