Research grants and funding amounts within the osteopathic medical profession have increased substantially from 1999 to 2004. New data were compared with previously published reports on research funding dating back to 1989.
In 1995, the American Osteopathic Association launched Osteopathic Postdoctoral Training Institutions (OPTIs) to further incorporate osteopathic principles and practice (OPP) in osteopathic graduate medical education. The evolution of the OPP teaching programs at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine in Lewisburg and at the Mountain State OPTI is described.
Medical educators at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine in Lewisburg designed an electronic rating form to assist preceptors in evaluating student performance for third- and fourth-year clinical rotations. The authors compare student grades from the new form to preclinical grades and objective structured clinical evaluations, as well as student test results from the Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination USA.
In the United States, the number of intercountry adoptions has steadily increased in the past 15 years. To better advise families and aid them in making an informed decision when adopting a foreign-born child, healthcare providers should understand the medical aspects of such adoptions. Pretravel consultation is addressed, as are postemigration medical examinations. This article reviews the medical aspects of intercountry adoption for adoptive parents in the United States.
The case of a 69-year-old white woman with diabetes mellitus and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is described. The patient was prescribed high-dose prednisone therapy for COPD exacerbation. She died from rhinocerebral mucormycosis at 6 days postadmission despite aggressive medical and surgical intervention. The authors outline risk factors associated with this condition.
