Osteopathic Physicians in the United States: Antibiotic Prescribing Practices for Patients With Nonspecific Upper Respiratory Tract Infections
Chao Sun, Sherman Jew, and Susan L. Dasta
J Am Osteopath Assoc 2006 106:450-455. [Abstract] [Full Text] [PDF]

The authors look at variables that may influence prescribing patterns among osteopathic physicians treating patients for nonspecific upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs). Of 9.6 million patient visits to osteopathic physicians for URTIs from July 1, 1997, to June 30, 2001, in the United States, physicians prescribed antibiotics in 56.4% (5.41 million) of those encounters. Patient characteristics found to affect prescribing behaviors include race and sex, and physician characteristics include medical specialty and geographic region.

Blinding Protocols, Treatment Credibility, and Expectancy: Methodologic Issues in Clinical Trials of Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment
John C. Licciardone and David P. Russo
J Am Osteopath Assoc 2006 106:457-463. [Abstract] [Full Text] [PDF]

When conducting clinical investigations of osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT), researchers must select control models carefully. Treatment credibility can interact with subject expectations and study design in complex ways, especially in clinical trials that investigate the efficacy of manual therapies.

Interexaminer Reliability of Three Methods of Combining Test Results to Determine Side of Sacral Restriction, Sacral Base Position, and Innominate Bone Position
Henry C. Tong, Oscar G. Heyman, Derek A. Lado, and Mara M. Isser
J Am Osteopath Assoc 2006 106:464-468. [Abstract] [Full Text] [PDF]

The authors studied interexaminer reliability by comparing various palpatory examinations used to determine sacral base and innominate bone positions in sacroiliac joint dysfunction. Patients with low back pain underwent two identical sets of palpatory examinations given by two physicians, separately, at a university spine center. Results were compiled and interpreted by three methods: using the one test result with the highest interexaminer reliability, requiring at least one test result to be abnormal for diagnosis, and requiring all test results to be abnormal for diagnosis. The first of these methods consistently provided the best interexaminer reliability.
