The authors look at variables that may influence prescribing patterns among
osteopathic physicians treating patients for nonspecific upper respiratory
tract infections (URTIs). Of 9.6 million patient visits to osteopathic
physicians for URTIs from July 1, 1997, to June 30, 2001, in the United
States, physicians prescribed antibiotics in 56.4% (5.41 million) of those
encounters. Patient characteristics found to affect prescribing behaviors
include race and sex, and physician characteristics include medical specialty
and geographic region.
