One of THE JOURNAL's associate editors describes the importance of the work of Sandra L. Sleszynski, DO, Thomas Glonek, PhD, and William A. Kuchera, DO, to the osteopathic medical profession through their award-winning October 2004 contribution to THE JOURNAL, "Outpatient Osteopathic Single Organ System Musculoskeletal Exam Form series: validation of the Outpatient Osteopathic SOS Musculoskeletal Exam Form, a new standardized medical record." The authors received the George W. Northup, DO, Medical Writing Award, on October 24, 2005, during the AOA's Unified Osteopathic Convention in Orlando, Fla, for "changing the way osteopathic physicians practice [medicine], think, and conduct research."

Computer Animation and Improved Student Comprehension of Basic Science Concepts

The author presents the results of an investigation into the efficacy of a computer animation developed at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine in Lewisburg to teach medical school students about deoxyribonucleic acid replication. Lesson comprehension, as measured through written tests, was sig-nificantly higher for students who used the computer animation than for students who used a textbook chapter (P<.01).

Beating Asthma: A Community-Based Asthma Education Initiative

Designed to empower people with asthma by providing them with information about their pulmonary disease, Beating Asthma is a community-based educational intervention that took place in Syracuse, NY, in 1997. The project consists of a series of three lectures delivered in a single 2-hour evening program by a pulmonologist, a health educator, and a licensed clinical psychologist. Surveys were distributed to participants before and after the program to assess general knowledge of asthma, the disease's pathophysiology, and asthma-management skills. Seventy-eight (77%) of the 101 families participating in the event completed both questionnaires. Regression model analysis of survey results showed that participants with the lowest scores before intervention achieved the greatest gains after intervention (P<.001). Analysis of the three topic areas revealed that only the subscore for disease management differed significantly from zero (P<.001). The authors assess the quality and usefulness of the survey instrument and the lecture content for future use.

Magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS), or nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, is an application of magnetic resonance imaging that provides chemical information about tissue metabolites. The scope of MRS has recently been expanded to include the classification and diagnosis of cancers in other regions of the body. The authors review the use of MRS as a clinical tool in the identification of cerebral neoplasia type and grade, as well as neoplasia in the prostate, colon, breast, cervix, pancreas, and esophagus.
