Home Treadmill Injuries in Infants and Children Aged to 5 Years: A Review of Consumer Product Safety Commission Data and an Illustrative Report of Case
Mazen I. Abbas, H. Brent Bamberger, and Rick W. Gebhart
J Am Osteopath Assoc 2004 104: 372-376. [Abstract] [Full Text] [PDF]

An increasing emphasis in the United States on physical fitness has led to the growing popularity of home treadmills. Thus, a specific hazard has become more accessible to infants and children aged to 5 years. A description of a hand injury to a 2-year-old boy whose hand became wedged between the moving belt and the support bar at the rear end of a treadmill illustrates how quickly and unavoidably such an injury can occur with currently available equipment. The authors also provide an analysis of frequency reporting data for home treadmill injuries in this demographic group from the US Consumer Product Safety Commission. Despite a low number of such injuries to infants and children aged to 5 years, the potential exists for costly and serious complications. Therefore, the authors recommend that additional safety measures and guidelines be established for home treadmills.

Myasthenia Gravis
Milind J. Kothari
J Am Osteopath Assoc 2004 104: 377-384. [Abstract] [Full Text] [PDF]

Myasthenia gravis, a chronic neuromuscular disorder, can lead to various degrees of neurologic dysfunction. For family physicians, a patient with myasthenia gravis may present a diagnostic dilemma. The aim of this review is to familiarize family physicians with the clinical features, electrodiagnostic testing methods, and the treatment and care of patients with myasthenia gravis so they can take an active role in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with myasthenia gravis. Led to a better understanding of myasthenia gravis, family physicians may have better interactions with consulting neurologists, all the better to benefit patients.
