About the Cover: Estimates indicate that at least 2 to 4 million American women are physically abused each year and that domestic violence may occur in as many as one of every 4 families. Moreover, studies document that women in the United States are more likely to be assaulted, raped, or killed by a current or former male partner than by all other types of assailants combined. When lifetime incidence of abuse is considered, abuse seems to affect women similarly across diverse socioeconomic circumstances, as shown in a 1995 study of abuse among black and white women in urban and rural primary care settings. Given the fact that a patient’s experience of domestic violence may be intentionally masked, it is incumbent upon physicians to screen women patients routinely for such a history.
