Musculoskeletal Disorders: Does the Osteopathic Medical Profession Demonstrate Its Unique and Distinctive Characteristics?
Chao Sun, Gautam J. Desai, David S. Pucci, and Sherman Jew
J Am Osteopath Assoc 2004 104: 149-155. [Abstract] [Full Text] [PDF]

The authors used the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey: 1999 Summary to compare the practice patterns of osteopathic and allopathic physicians in the management of musculoskeletal disorders in family practice settings. Patient and physician characteristics, diagnostic test ordering patterns, treatments, and amount of time spent with patients during visits were compared.

Early Diagnosis Is Key in Vancomycin-Induced Linear IgA Bullous Dermatosis and Stevens-Johnson Syndrome
Douglas H. Jones, Michael Todd, and Timothy J. Craig
J Am Osteopath Assoc 2004 104: 157-163. [Abstract] [Full Text] [PDF]

Vancomycin usage can cause linear IgA bullous dermatosis and Stevens-Johnson syndrome. These blistering disorders can have clinical manifestations that are difficult to distinguish; however, it is important to make the distinction because treatment and prognosis are different.

CLINICAL PRACTICE:

Common Scenarios to Clarify the Interpretation of Cardiac Markers
Gary E. Ross, Frank N. Bever, Zi Uddin, Lingareddy Devireddy, and Julius M. Gardin
J Am Osteopath Assoc 2004 104: 165-176. [Abstract] [Full Text] [PDF]

From a retrospective review of 2388 medical records, the authors present the case histories of six patients who presented for presumptive cardiac complaints to the emergency department of St John Macomb Hospital in Warren, Mich. These cases represent most of the educational scenarios required for the understanding of the interpretation of cTnI and creatine kinase isoenzyme MB patterns in clinical practice.

MEDICAL EDUCATION:

A Divisional Approach to Enhancing Research Among Osteopathic Family Practice Residents
Peggy Smith-Barbaro, Kimberly G. Fulda, and Samuel T. Coleridge
J Am Osteopath Assoc 2004 104: 177-179. [Abstract] [Full Text] [PDF]

Helping residents overcome obstacles to complete projects should be a key focus of programs requiring research. The availability of educational and physical resources, such as computers, space, and seminars, is progressively addressed by family medicine departments with successful research programs. Within the Department of Family Medicine at the University of North Texas Health Science Center, the Division of Education and Research was developed in 1999 and included a program to assist family practice residents in completing research papers.
