Effectiveness of a Sham Protocol and Adverse Effects in a Clinical Trial of Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment in Nursing Home Patients
Donald R. Noll, Brian F. Degenhardt, Melissa Stuart, Rene McGovern, and Michelle Matteson
J Am Osteopath Assoc 2004 104: 107-113. [Full Text] [PDF]

As part of a randomized clinical trial to look at the effectiveness of osteopathic manipulative treatment to boost immunity in nursing home residents, the authors conducted a poststudy survey to determine the effectiveness of the protocols to blind participants and inquire into how beneficial they thought their protocol treatments were. This study adds to a growing body of literature on the use of sham treatments in manual medicine research.

Effect of Inhaled Corticosteroids on Markers of Pulmonary Inflammation and Lung Maturation in Preterm Infants With Evolving Chronic Lung Disease
Nehal A. Parikh, Robert G. Locke, Aaron Chidekel, Kathleen H. Leef, John Emberger, David A. Paul, and John L. Stefano
J Am Osteopath Assoc 2004 104: 114-120. [Abstract] [Full Text] [PDF]

The authors evaluated the additive effect of inhaled corticosteroids on markers of lung inflammation in infants receiving a 7-day course of systemic steroids. To the authors' knowledge, this study is the first to evaluate the effects of simultaneous administration of inhaled and systemic corticosteroids by assessing markers of pulmonary inflammation in premature infants with early chronic lung disease. In addition, they concurrently measured serum cytokines, which allowed them to characterize systemic inflammation postextubation.

MEDICAL EDUCATION:

Status of Complementary and Alternative Medicine in the Osteopathic Medical School Curriculum
Dale W. Saxon, Godfrey Tunnicliff, James J. Brokaw, and Beat U. Raess
J Am Osteopath Assoc 2004 104: 121-126. [Abstract] [Full Text] [PDF]

While most allopathic medical schools in the United States offer instruction in complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), pertinent information about the teaching of CAM at osteopathic medical schools is lacking. The authors therefore sought to document the form and content of CAM instruction at osteopathic medical schools and compare their findings with those reported for allopathic medical schools in a recently published survey.

Interdisciplinary Approach to Teaching Medication Adherence to Pharmacy and Osteopathic Medical Students
Dana L. Singla, George E. MacKinnon, III, Karen J. MacKinnon, Wisam Younis, and Ben Field
J Am Osteopath Assoc 2004 104: 127-132. [Abstract] [Full Text] [PDF]

The purpose of this project was to demonstrate to pharmacy and osteopathic medical students the value of interdisciplinary education through participation in an interdisciplinary medication adherence project. Each pharmacy student, assuming the role of a pharmacist, was paired with a medical student acting as a physician with a needlestick exposure requiring HIV prophylaxis therapy. After completion of therapy, all students met to discuss adherence barriers, complete an attitudinal survey, and obtain a tablet count. Most pharmacy and medical students agreed that participation in this project will help them work better within the health care team.
