About the Cover

About the Cover: Beginning on page 521, Shah et al define community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) and its causative pathogens, detail its risk factors, explain diagnostic methods, and compare current guidelines for its management. A diagnosis of CAP is based on clinical, laboratory, and radiologic data because physical examination is not sensitive or specific enough for the detection of pneumonia. Therefore, all patients with pneumonia need a chest radiograph to establish the diagnosis. Chest radiographs are also useful for making alternate diagnoses of associated conditions such as parapneumonic effusions, lung abcesses, and multilobar involvement.
